Tell us about yourself!
I have a wonderful life in the outdoors, enabling anyone (specialising in working with young people and adults with Autism and other special educational needs and abilities) who wants to 'step outside and join the adventure'. I have teaching and working in the outdoors since the age of 18, some 30 years later I have the joy of owning my own CIC where I enable people of all ages and abilities to try out different adventures in the outdoors, including Forest School, Bushcraft, expeditions and so much more. I am happiest when I'm outdoors and enabling others to adventure in the great outdoors, mainly around Cornwall and Devon (Dartmoor to be more concise). But really I'm happy any where in the world, exploring, learning and gaining life skills where ever I am. I started my outdoor career in the Army Cadet Force as a cadet at 13 and one of the very first female cadets in Cornwall (not something I really shout about, but years later I now realise how much of an impact this had on my life and the challenges I faced within a very male dominated youth organisation and quite how that probably shaped the person I am now). At 18 I became one of very few female instructors in the County (probably within the Country) and that led on to a very successful part time career learning many great skills both in youth work and as an Officer (I was commissioned at 22) within the Army Cadet Force, 'retiring' from this at 29 as a Captain. Alongside this I had various 'civilian' jobs and also gained the travel bug. At the age 19 I travelled solo to Israel and worked on a moshav for a few months before traveling and exploring Egypt for a few weeks. This was the start of many travel experiences throughout my life, all of which you will be able to read about in my blog pages (currently being updated!). blog: theoutdoorplace.info
Favourite things to do in the Outdoors
expeditions, exploring long distance paths is something relatively new to me, but I love it.
Any Furry Friends you take with you?
when I'm at home running my business from the woods on the small farm where I live, my Westie (Daisy) is always with me as the 'woodland mascot' and is adored by all.
Why is it important to you to help encourage women into the outdoors?
Having worked in the outdoors for the past 30 years, I have seen the industry change quite significantly and I pleased to say for the better in encouraging women into the outdoors, however I do feel it still has a way to go. Also a simple passion from how much it has helped me throughout my life, being outdoors and enjoying the adventure should be accessible for ALL and there are lots of male role models in the industry but not nearly enough female role models.
